I’ve come to talk with you again              또 그 고통을 말하려 들렸다.

 

Because a vision softly creeping                 내 칠흙같은 골속의 어둠에 남은

                                                                  한가닥 희망이 부드럽게 스며들어

Left its seeds while I was sleeping              이 절망의 생활에 빛의 씨를 남겼지.

And the vision that was planted                   그 심겨진 희망은 결코 아무도

in my brain still remains                                    뺄수없는 깊숙한 곳에 백혀있지.

within the sound of silence                         그 무감각의 영역 속 깊숙히. 

In restless dreams I walked alone                난 홀로 그 악몽의 꿈속서 헤메였지.

Narrow streets of cobblestone                     조일듯한 암흑의 골목길을 헤치며

Beneath the halo of a street lamp                  꺼질 듯 희미한 가로등밑을 지날때

I turned my collar to the cold and damp       축축한 냉기에 젖은옷깃을 여민순간

when my eyes were stabbed by the            갑자기 내눈을 찌르는 황홀한 네온 향락의 빛은

flash of a neon light that split the night           도시속의 암흑을 두갈래로 가르며

and touched the sound of silence              네온사인속에 무관심에 무언의 침묵을 자극하더라.

 

And in the naked light I saw                      그 홀닥벗은 무념의 가리지않은 원초빛 이기에

ten thousand people maybe more               비로소 난 향락빛안에 숨겨진 수많은 인간들이

                                                                   도살장에서 헤메임을 보았지

People talking without speaking                  속없는 이치만 내뱉는 인간들,

People hearing without listening                 무조건 복종하고 진실을 못듣는 인간들,

People writing songs                                본능자극 음악과 하루살이의

                                                            쾌락존재위주에 광란에 춤추는 인간들

that voices never share                             바른 님의 대화를 나눌수 없는 주장들이지.

No one dare disturb                                  그 무관심 목청 주장인 무언의 제시에

the sound of silence                                       아무도 반박할 용기조차 없고나.

  

Hello dar “Fools” said I, “You do not know    병신들아, 진실을 무관할때 

silence like a cancer grows.                            너도 암에 걸리는걸 모르는가.

Hear my words that I might teach you.         내 목청을 들어봐라,

                                                                  그 소리로 니들을 깨우칠려하니까.

Take my arms that I might reach you.”         내 손길을 잡어줘,

                                                                  그래야 구렁속의 널 구하잖아?

But my words like silent raindrops fell          그런 내 말은 등돌린 침묵의 빗방울로 튀여

and echoed in the wells of silence                  우물속 깊이 무성의 메아리로 떨어지더라.

 

And the people bowed and prayed               인간들은 지들이 만든 물질만능 기회숭배

to the neon god they made                           네온사인 신 앞에서 무릎꿇어 기도할때

And the sign flashed out its warning             그 네온사인은 알파벳순서대로

in the words that it was forming                    게시록을 반짝대며 교리를 말하더라.

 

And the sign said “The words                    반짝이는 네온신의 교리는 

of the prophets are written on the             “ 지하철 광고란과 슬럼가 아파트벽에 도배되있다”

subway walls and tenement halls”                    라고 세뇌시키더라.

And whispered in the sounds of silence      그리곤, 무음의 소리로 무관심할것을 속삭이더라…
